The old adage "you can't teach an old dog new tricks", according to science has no legs to stand on. The human brain has now been proven to be able to adapt even in old age. This astonishing ability of the brain being able to adapt and change is known as neuroplasticity.
Below are three simple ways to keep your brain in shape and ahead of the game.
1. Give your brain a workout:
Just like your muscles the same concept applies "use it or lose it" you should be using a variety of memory improving techniques.. Beating down the same path day in day out doesn't actually challenge the brain in all the different areas. Its actually more like running down the worn path that eventually wears out. Mix it up a little and challenge yourself. If it seems too easy it probably is too easy. The three big words for brain workout are.
NEW CHALLENGING AND FUN: Make sure it's new, challenging and fun. If you spend your time playing puzzle games change it up a little and try memory games. It's that simple. Remember new, challenging, and fun.
2. Be social. Have fun and spend time with friends:
Whenever you around friends you spend loads of your time remembering stories playing games making jokes etc.. Being social stimulates many areas of your brain. Studies have now proven that people's lives that are full of fun and friends come with great cognitive benefits. Even watching movies with a good friend that makes you laugh can be a great and easy way stimulate your brain. Even after the movie you could go out for a drink and discuss different aspects of the movie, using your memory to pull out all those important aspects of the movie. The great thing about exercising your memory with friends is that it's just plain fun and natural. If you don't have many friends around you at this current time. Try putting yourself into more social areas of life, go to an art exhibition or find something that interests you and go to an event. There are so many events out there these days it really is easy to get yourself into a social situation that you feel comfortable in.
3. Eliminate stress:
It is widely been proven that stress eliminate brain cells and has many negative effects on our bodies. Our bodies are directly linked to brain. A healthy body equals a healthy mind. So how do we effectively relieve ourselves of stress. Well there are so many different methods out there! The two that I find to be the most effective methods are meditation and breathing exercises. Meditation has now been backed up with many studies it has shown to improve one's health and is one of the top methods to reducing stress.
Meditation doesn't necessarily mean changing a religion. It's just a technique that people can use to calm one's mind and body. Meditation could also prove to be very effective in helping one's imagination become more creative and therefore making a far more productive mind. There. There are many different types of meditations to choose from. My recommendation would be to do a bit more research on what meditation you would like to do. Find something that appeals to your interest. Or even go to you to type in meditation. You should be able to find yourself a guided meditation video. You wont like all of them but see if you can find something that helps you.
If meditation is not your thing, try simple breathing techniques. One that I would recommend is to take 10 deep breaths into your solar plexus, the bottom of your belly. On each breath, try and hold that breath for 20 seconds and then exhale that breath. Do the same for the following 10 breaths. If 20 seconds is to Long for you try just 10 seconds. Doing this just once a day will have great effects on reducing stress. This technique helps slow the heart rate down and get more oxygen into the blood system. The oxygenated blood also helps remove toxins from your body. The brain doesn't work too well in a toxic environment, so getting rid of a few toxins along the way, wont do the brain any harm either.

Games consoles: From Play Station, X box and Nintendo. You'll find a host of games out there. My personal favourite console to use for memory games and is quite simple is the Nintendo DS. Nintendo have taking the memory game market quite seriously and have launched a host of different memory training games. The best part about the Nintendo DS is it really easy to get used to using the console. Pretty much anyone can pick up the DS and start playing straight away. To me that's the genius part of it the whole family can get involved!

Sometimes it's quite difficult for our brains to remember very complex things that we need to remember. Mnemonics are the tools that we can use to help ourselves remember those difficult things that we need to remember.
The way I like to see mnemonics is as a creative way for us to remember things. Our brains work in a very sophisticated way. It likes to absorb all the information around us in textures, smells, sounds, feelings and emotions to name a few. Unfortunately a lot of the information that we need to remember in the modern world is just plain simple boring. We find it difficult to absorb these boring memories.
The best way for our brains to remember something exciting and have all the stimuli involved. For example if you go to the beach to watch the sunset it's a memory you will remember. You can smell the sea, feel the sun, hear the waves and you have an emotional sense of relaxation. By using all your senses you brain finds it easier to create solid memories.
USING THE WHOLE MIND
The key to making your mnemonics work: Always try to create mnemonics with a vivid memory. To be able to create a Vivid memory we need to use all the senses available to us. Try creating images with bright colours our brains remember brighter colours far better than dull colors. Try and exaggerate the size of what you need to remember. When something doesn't seem normal to your brain, it tries to understand how that is possible. So exaggerate a huge loaf bread at the shop or a tiny car getting washed. Use all your senses when creating that memory.
Really slow down and try absorb that moment. Dress it up over exaggerate the situation and really make it something special. Even if it is just a shopping list!! Give it colours give it smells, Put flashing fancy lights on special items. Make the memory funny! The funnier it is the easier it will be for you to remember. Mundane and dull things seem to slip past our memory as they don't excite it. By even making something rude or out of the ordinary it's a brilliant way to remember and make you laugh.
There are three important factors to creating good mnemonics: Location, Association, and Imagination.
Imagination is where you need to be creative in coming up with ideas that are unique to yourself that you will find it easier to remember. Create whatever you feel like remember there are no restrictions in your imagination it is vast and you can create whatever you like aliens, new planets strange insects, whatever it is you can create it.
Association is the method by which you link something to what needs to be remembered. You can create Association by:
Smashing things into each other, or merging things on top of each other. Have things dancing together, have things driving a car together. It can be anything you just need to put them with each other. For example if you're needing to remember a hair appointment at three o'clock. Imagine three little pigs having their hair cat in your local hairdresser. The association is the three pigs in the hairdresser. Imagination is the whole visualisation together.
Location is very important. The location can help you separate different mnemonics from each other. So for instance we could use new or York city for 1 mnemonic. And London city for another Mnemonic. They are both cities but they are both very different from each other. They can be used for memories in the same category but different memories that you need to remember. By creating your mnemonics in cities or different locations it'll help you categorize your memory.
A simple Mnemonic example:
Let's say we need to remember a shopping list.
* Apples
* Pears
* Grapes
* Water
We could take the first letters of the list and make a word or sentence. In this case I'll use the word. G.A.W.PGrapes. Apple. Water. Pears). Hey! Our behaviour directly links to how our brains respond. Below are 3 ways to look at our behaviour and the effects it has on our memory.
Emotions: Our emotions if out-of-control severely affect memory. We tend to remember things far more clearly in a relaxed neutral state of mind than in an angry or stressed state of mind. In some cases like depression you tend to only remember the negative emotions. To enhance your memories potential you need to control your emotions and try to be in a calm state that allows the brain to function at its optimum level.
By learning simple techniques to help ourselves relax and put ourselves in a calmer state of mind. You will find that you will achieve far greater memory recall than if you were in a stressful state of mind. Meditation is one way. But if your not into that just do some deep breaths into your abdomen. It lowers your heart rate and calms you down. It is really as simple as breathing!!
Exercise: One of the most important aspects of a healthy memory is exercise. Exercise provide oxygen to the bloodstream the bloodstream it then takes oxygenated blood to the brain. Even a brisk 15 min walk will help. You should at least do aerobic exercise three times a week. But for optimal results six times would be better. At first doing exercise seems like a bit of a task is not worth doing. But the best thing about exercising you'll start noticing immediate results. You might not loose allot of weight immediately (depending on how much exercise your doing) but you'll start thinking clearer and your energy levels will increase.
Food: We need to look at our behaviour with food. Sometimes bad eating habits can be all we need to blame. Eating junk food out of habit and convenience doesn't help improve our brains working state at all. In a modern-day there is plenty convenient healthy food sources even quick takeaway is. McDonald's is even offering more salad options. I will means enjoy a treat every now and then but regularly tried to eat healthier meals in your memory should improve. If you can't find a healthy fast food alternative in your area. Try making yourself a healthy lunchbox the night before.
I know it's not easy to change your behaviour but it's worth in the long run. Not only will your memory improve your health. Should also.
Try this out now!
One of the best ways I have found to change my habits and behaviours. Is to write down all the things you would like to change that are negative. Give these negative aspects of your life recognition and write a small sentence as to why they benefit you. And then write down why it doesn't benefit you. Just below that, write down a positive that you would like to replace the negative with and why it benefits you. For example
Junk food: positive= quick, easy and saves me time. Negative= I gain weight and it makes me feel unhealthy. (Next the replacement)
Healthy food: Try to find quick and easy healthy foods to eat. I'll benefit from this as my health will improve and my energy levels will be consistent through out the day.
Write a small list of 3 things you'd like to change now. Trust me you'll be amazed at how motivated you'll be to change these bad habits once you realise how easy the answer's are! Don't right a massive list that's impossible. Keep it simple achieve your goals and keep motivated.

One of the best ways I have found to change my habits and behaviours. Is to write down all the things you would like to change that are negative. Give these negative aspects of your life recognition and write a small sentence as to why they benefit you. And then write down why it doesn't benefit you. Just below that, write down a positive that you would like to replace the negative with and why it benefits you. For example
Junk food: positive= quick, easy and saves me time. Negative= I gain weight and it makes me feel unhealthy. (Next the replacement)
Healthy food: Try to find quick and easy healthy foods to eat. I'll benefit from this as my health will improve and my energy levels will be consistent through out the day.
Write a small list of 3 things you'd like to change now. Trust me you'll be amazed at how motivated you'll be to change these bad habits once you realise how easy the answer's are! Don't right a massive list that's impossible. Keep it simple achieve your goals and keep motivated.

When using visualization techniques always try to use something that you can confidently associate with your memory. Try not to use anything that negatively effects you or is hard to remember. Generally easy nursery rhymes and colourfully images which are far away from your normal day reality tend to work far better than mundane day to day activity. It stands out in your memory cause it doesn't fit in with the rest of your day and it's fun!
If you need to pick up something from the grocery store and you don't have a shopping list to hand. Try visualising yourself fishing for the items. Real in that washing powder, bread, milk and newspaper. It seems stupid I know. But it really does work. It just kicks out the ordinary and brings in something that's wacky and new. The fishing technique works for me cause I love fishing in my spare time but I sure don't go fishing for groceries. See how I used a positive in my life to remind me of the mundane shopping list.
